The Food Byte: Tiramisu

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Here's what my mom made. Italy's traditional Tiramisu with a twist. This didn't last long enough at home for obvious reasons.

My mom should be a chef. No really. And so should my dad. Half the food entries on this blog are home-made dishes and they do taste something out of a hotel/restaurant. Not boasting here.

I'd like to be as good in cooking as my parents are but I detest the kitchen and am only good in making desserts. Savoury food...not so much.

Let me put it this way- my mom showed me thrice how to make boiled rice...plain white rice. Till date, I have not mastered it. What's there to master? It should be real easy, right? NO.

Review: Benefit Cosmetics Hello Flawless Liquid Foundation

Saturday, May 19, 2012

I first heard about Benefit Cosmetics' liquid foundation while browsing I read the features about the newly launched foundation and a few customer reviews and I couldn't wait to try it. I love Benefit as a brand; I talk about my best purchase, Benetint all the time (ask my friends!). It's my favorite product. Read the review here.

So back to Benefit's foundation. It's called Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow. Key benefits include:
  • Oil free: This makes it suitable for people with oily skin.
  • SPF 25: Hello in-built sun-screen! We definitely need this in Dubai's unforgiving scorching summer season.
  • PA+++: This is a UV filter (ultra violet rays filter) and is of the highest grade, which is a good thing.
  • Vitamin C & E: Yay for vitamins in skincare products!
The best part of this foundation? Okay, 2 best parts: it is a hydrating product. It moisturizes while doing its job. And second- it has sparse microscopic shimmer that gives you a luminous look.

When it comes to coverage- it is all about light to medium. The product is build-able i.e. if you want full coverage, you will need to use at least 2-3 full pumps of the foundation and then seal it with either loose powder OR the powder version of the foundation (also called Hello Flawless). For me, just one pump works as I don't use heavy foundation and prefer mine to be almost sheer.

Tip: Use Benefit's POREfessional prior to using the foundation. POREfessional comes handy for people with large pores as it minimizes the appearance of such and preps the skin for a smooth application- it's like a primer. It also helps control shine. I don't have a problem with pores but using this product helped the foundation to glide on real smooth. Will review it soon.

I really like Hello Flawless for the natural finished look it delivers. It's like a tinted moisturizer that is light and does not suffocate your skin. I love such foundations.

It comes in 9 different shades from light to dark and is available at Sephora and Faces. Ask the lady at the counter to apply POREfessional and the foundation on the whole of your face. You will see the difference then  and will be able to make a better decision (please do not test any foundation on the back of your hand, this is not the right way to select your shade).

Thank you to the Benefit team for introducing me to this and other star products. I think Hello Flawless has become my second favorite Benefit product!

The Best of Men's Perfumes

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

I love (obsessed with) perfumes. I buy at least 2-3 every month. They aren't new releases all the time...sometimes I'll remember a perfume I tried on while on vacation and then scurry to the mall to get it. Having said that, I absolutely love some of the perfumes created for men. My dad, brother and friends have an amazing collection.

And I totally appreciate men who put in extra effort when it comes to clothes, perfumes, shoes and watches  (there is NO excuse to look like a slob).

Here are a few of the perfumes my dad and bro use regularly.

Man by Bvlgari -- Pasha by Cartier -- Casual Friday by Escada

Euphoria by Calvin Klein -- La Nuit De L'Homme by YSL -- Echo by Davidoff

V by Valentino -- Fahrenheit by Dior -- 212 Glam Men by Caroline Herrera

Essie vs. P2 vs. Revlon

Sunday, May 13, 2012

When I first chose Essie's Nice is Nice nail polish color at the nail salon, I wasn't too sure how it would look like. The color is a soft lavender/lilac and I had never tried it before. But once on the nails, it looked great. I even got a few compliments.

Essie Nice is Nice polish
When I went to buy the polish, I realized that it was quite a popular color and it was out of stock at two retail outlets.

A few months later while in London, I spotted a similar color from another brand called P2 and the range is called Color Victim . I promptly bought it. I was really happy I finally got the color I was looking for.

Fast forward to a few months later. I was at a Revlon event where they launched their new line of nail polishes called Top Speed. I got the chance to get my nails done and while I was about to choose an emerald green color  I spotted a replica of Essie's Nice is Nice. It's called Lily.

Revlon Top Speed Lily

The only difference between Revlon's and my alternative is that Essie's has a slight hint of pink (you'll notice it in the pictures). So there you go, if you are on the hunt for a lilac/lavender color- these are your close alternatives.

The Limited Edition Batman Accessory

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

I'm a huge comic books fan and even a bigger fan of Batman. I don't like any of the other superheroes from DC Comics or Marvel Comics the way I like  love Batman. This passion stems from the fact that I grew up watching Batman cartoons, the TV series and religiously reading the comic books.

I have to thank my younger brother though- he was the one who'd stayed glued to the TV series and got me hooked on to it. We were obsessed with much that we used to sing "nananananana Batmaaaan" and run around the house with bedsheets wrapped around our necks (that was a cape to us). We also managed to re-create Batman's mask by using our hands stuck to our faces (Batman fans will know this).

Fast forward to today and I'm still a die-hard fan of the caped crusader (so is my bro). So it goes without saying that I have a few customized Batman accessories including post-it-notes (that I made!) and also 2 original Batman figurines. I would like more. A fan can never have enough, right?

The latest installment in the Batman series and the final chapter from director Christopher Nolan is 'Batman: The Dark Knight Rises'. I've been following the releases closely in terms of 'first look' at images from the movie, sketches and the trailers. All of this looks amazing and I can hardly wait for the movie to hit the big screen. And on that note, let me tell you what I discovered last week-

A Nokia x Batman special edition mobile phone. Don't you just love Nokia now?

Nokia Lumia 800 Batman Edition

Wait, it gets better. The phone, a Nokia Lumia 800 looks like a prop that would be used in the Batman movies. It comes in a black casing with the ever so recognizable Batman logo carved in by laser. And the best part of this? Only 40 of them have been manufactured which makes it a limited edition phone- so good luck finding one, I'm pretty sure they're sold out. The model was available for purchase ever since Dec 2011 and I find out about this now- pathetic. I doubt this edition is available in this region because the local Nokia website has no data on this.

I shall leave you with these images (all from; I am jealous of the reviewer who got his hands on it). If anyone wants to know- my birthday is not anytime soon but I am accepting gifts *cough* this specific phone model *cough.

They put in effort for a special box
That would be the 15th piece out of the 40 that have been manufactured
How sleek is this? That's the actual phone and not the cover/case
Why did Nokia have to release only 40 of these?
I do not care about the features. I just want this phone because it's Batman!

What She Wore

I have a penchant for watches and am eyeing a new Gucci watch that's black and platinum. See the Dior watch I spotted- isn't it amazing?
